The first of the 100 mainline trains have started to make their way through Spalding while engineering works take place over the next few days – and traffic appears to be flowing smoothly.

Network Rail is diverting a total of 50 trains from the East Coast Main Line through the town today while engineering works take place between Grantham and Doncaster – on top of the usual freight and passenger timetable. A further 50 trains will be making their way through Spalding tomorrow.

While there is some congestion along Winsover Road and Park Road level crossings when the trains are coming but the barriers are lifting quickly allowing traffic to flow again.

There were fears that the additional rail traffic would have increased congestion on the town’s roads – with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue sending over an additional appliance to provide support.
