M3 Winchester crash: Mercedes driver pronounced dead after collision
Emergency services were called to the collision on the M3 southbound by Bar End Winchester[1] at 10.43am on Tuesday, May 16.
The crash involved a broken-down HGV and grey Mercedes Sprinter, police said in a statement released on Wednesday, May 17.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 38-year-old man from Walsall, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The southbound carriageway was closed until around 8pm due to a complicated and difficult recovery from the incident following an initial police investigation.
The day-long closure of the M3 forced thousands of cars into Winchester both from the motorway and the A34, causing city-wide congestion.
Police sergeant Spencer Wragg, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “I would like to thank motorists for their patience yesterday whilst we dealt with the aftermath of this incident, with our partners from the emergency services, highways agency and specialist recovery.
“I would ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident itself or either vehicle just prior to the collision to contacts us.
“We would particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dash cam footage that may assist our investigation.”
Anyone with information should call 101, quoting reference 44230192336.
