Lucky escape for lorry driver after crash shuts A55 stretch for nine …

A lorry driver was lucky to escape unscathed after their HGV overturned on the A55[1] in the early hours of the morning. The crash took place just after junction 28 at Waen, near St Asaph[2] on the eastbound carriageway shortly before 3am.

The stretch between junction 28 and junction 29 was closed off for the best part of nine hours[3] due to the crash. It caused an oil spill which had to be cleaned up before the road could reopen.

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed this morning that they were not called to the crash. Traffic Wales later confirmed that “the driver of the vehicle is safe and well”.

The fire service was alerted just before 3am and a crew from St Asaph was sent to the scene to assist North Wales Police[5]. There was heavy congestion in the area throughout the rest of the morning as drivers were diverted through Rhuallt.

Images from the scene showed that the HGV had overturned on its nearside, crushing the barriers on the edge of the carriageway. Firefighters used electric saws to cut through the mangled barrier that had become entangled with the HGV in the wreckage.

The HGV was removed from the scene shortly before 9am and the road reopened after the oil was cleared at around 11:50am. Traffic Wales added: “Thank you for your patience while those involved have worked hard in clearing the carriageway quickly under difficult circumstances.”
