Cyclist, 19, dead after crash with HGV in city centre as driver arrested

A teenage cyclist has died after a collision with a heavy goods vehicle in Manchester city centre on Wednesday (May 24).

Emergency services swarmed Great Bridgewater Street, off Deansgate, at around midday but tragically, the man, aged 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 55-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in police custody for questioning.

Police said the cyclist had been riding along the road at around 12pm when he was struck by the vehicle close to the junction of Watson Street.

Great Bridgewater Street remained closed off for a number of hours on Wednesday as investigations were carried out, with a number of officers stationed at the cordon. Tape also blocked off the pavement beside the Great Northern NCP car park

Greater Manchester Police are now appealing for anyone with information, dashcam or CCTV footage of the fatal crash to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
