Cheese rolling’s first 2023 casualty carried away on stretcher
It’s a hazard of the sport, but one person had to be taken away on a stretcher during the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling 2023. It happened during the men’s race at Coopers Hill in front of hundreds of spectators.
There were incredible scenes as people tumbled down the steep hill in pursuit of a huge cheese. Twisted ankles and the risk of worse is a risk competitors are willing to take year after year.
For one competitor in the men’s race, it ended painfully. Spectators saw him being stretchered off and it’s understood it was an ankle injury.
Earlier, hundreds had parked their cars and made the long way up the hill near Brockworth, off the A46. There were complaints in Coopers Edge about people parking all over the place.
People from across the UK, and as far away as the United States, Hungary and Spain watched the cheese-chasers. The event took place without the support of emergency services and people are warned they take part at their own risk.
