Chaos after lorry smashes into railway bridge – then into a car …

There was chaos when a lorry smashed into a railway bridge and then into a car. It blocked the main road between Nuneaton and Atherstone for more than an hour this morning.

Warwickshire Police were called at just after 9am to reports that a lorry had tried to squeeze under the low bridge at the junction of Atherstone Road and Nuneaton Road, near to Dobbies garden centre in Mancetter.[1][2][3][4]

It crashed into the bridge and then into a Ford Galaxy car. A spokesman for Warwickshire Police[5] said that, fortunately, there were no injuries.

The wedged lorry blocked the busy road for more than an hour, causing traffic to back-up either side of the bridge. The lorry was eventually moved at 10.19pm.

It is not the first time that a lorry has become wedged underneath the railway bridge. It is not the most-bashed bridge in the area, that title goes to the railway bridge in Watling Street – just along the A5.[6]
