Car and train in collision on North Yorkshire Moors railway

A driver has suffered serious injuries after a car and and train were involved in a collision at a level crossing on the North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway.

Police said the collision happened at around 2pm on Sunday afternoon. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway said the vehicle had collided with a "generator wagon" at the rear of the train.

The air ambulance was called to the scene and the driver was taken to hospital, our sister site Yorkshire Live reported[1]. It happened at a crossing at Newbridge, near Pickering.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services, including the air ambulance, are at the scene of a collision involving a car and a train on a level crossing on Yatt’s Road, Newbridge near Pickering. Motorists are advised to avoid the area while emergency services attend the incident.

"The collision was reported just after 2pm on 21 May. One person – the driver of the car – has sustained serious injuries. At the time of writing, no other injuries had been reported."

In a statement reported by the RailAdvent website[3], a spokesperson from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway[4] (NYMR) said: “We can confirm that there was a collision at around 14:00 on Sunday 21st May. A moving vehicle struck a generator wagon on the rear of the train at a Power Operated Gate Opener (POGO crossing) at Newbridge.

"The driver of the moving vehicle has been taken to hospital. No NYMR passengers or crew injuries have been reported. The police and emergency services are in attendance and the heritage railway is doing everything it can to fully cooperate, taking every precaution to ensure the safety of both staff and passengers, which is always our priority.

"As with all such accidents, it is currently being investigated by the RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Board). Services will resume as of 4pm."
