Bus smashes into railway bridge in Bath

This picture shows the dramatic moment a double-becker bus struck a low railway bridge in Bath[1] yesterday (May 4). Police[2] were called to the scene of the crash, which happened on Lower Bristol Road in Twerton[3], at around 6pm. Officers confirmed no injuries were reported[4], despite what looks like considerable damage to the front of the upper deck.

Pictures from the scene show that the A-pillar of the right hand side has completely split and ended up at a 90 degree angle to the bus itself, and the glass on the upper deck is undoubtedly smashed.[6] According to First buses, an investigation has been launched in order to find out what the cause of the incident was. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police[7] said: "We attended an incident where a double-decker bus collided with a bridge in Lower Bristol Road, Twerton, following a call at about 6pm yesterday (Thursday 4 May).

"No injuries were reported. The fire service attended the scene too and Network Rail[8] was notified. The vehicle was recovered to clear the road and officers left the scene at about 7.45pm."

A spokesperson for First buses said: "We can confirm a U5 Bath City bus has collided with a bridge in Twerton. Thankfully, there were no injuries from the passengers on-board, our driver or members of the public from the incident. "The safety and well-being of our passengers, drivers and the public are our number one priority.

"We have now launched an immediate investigation to determine the root cause of the incident."

Network Rail[9] have also been contacted for more information on the incident.
