A38 near Lichfield closed after three-vehicle crash

A three-vehicle collision has completely shut the A38 in Staffordshire. Staffordshire Police[1] are at the scene of the incident this evening (May 17).

The smash has shut the southbound carriageway of the A38 between the A5148 for Swinfen Island and the A5/M6 toll near Lichfield[2]. Drivers are now being warned to expect delays as emergency services deal with the crash.

It is believed to involve three vehicles, including one which has overturned. National Highways West Midlands said: “The A38 in Staffordshire is closed southbound between the A5148/A5206 near (Swinfen) and the A5/M6 Toll near (Weeford) due to a collision.

“Staffordshire Police[4] are in attendance.” A witness reported spotting air ambulance crew at the scene.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix said: “A38 Southbound closed due to overturned vehicle and accident, three vehicles involved from A5148 (Swinfen Island) to M6 Toll JT4 (Weeford Interchange). Congestion to Fradley Park.”

Motorists are being urged to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs. At the junction of A38/A5148 (Swinfen), drivers should continue along the A5148 southbound.

Next, they should continue along A5148 southwards to its junction with A5 (Shenstone). Then, they can take the exit to A5 eastbound and continue to the A38 at Weeford.
