A34 near Abingdon in Oxfordshire closed after crash and fuel …

A major Oxfordshire road is set to be closed overnight after crash caused a fuel spillage earlier today (Monday, May 8). A diversion route has been put in place while highways teams carry out emergency repairs. The A34 Northbound[1] is shut between Didcot and Abingdon[2] following the collision, which took place at around 8.43pm.

The incident involved a lorry and a bus. A resulting fuel spillage has caused damage to the road surface. The incident was first reported by Inrix, the traffic data company.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The A34 in Oxfordshire is closed northbound between the A4130 (Didcot[4]) and the A415 (Abingdon) to allow for emergency resurfacing works to take place following an earlier collision. A lorry and a bus were involved in this collision which resulted in a large fuel spillage, damaging the road surface. "National Highways contractors will be carrying out these repairs throughout the evening.

If this closure impacts on your planned route[5], please allow extra journey time.

"Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey." As a result of the incident, a diversion route has been put in place.

A34 Northbound diversion route in full

Diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol:

  • Exit the A34 northbound at Milton Interchange (A4130)
  • Use the 1st exit at the roundabout and join the A4130
  • Continue for 2 miles to the roundabout at Rowstock
  • Take the 3rd exit and join the A4147
  • Continue for 5 miles into Wantage[6]
  • Continue to a T junction with the A338 (Seesen Way) and turn right to join the A338
  • Follow the A338 out of Wantage and continue for 9 miles until the A420 roundabout
  • Use the 2nd exit and join the A420[7]
  • Continue for 5 miles to then re-join the A34 northbound at Botley Interchange
