200 ‘boy racers’ disrupted by police helicopter and drones
Police disrupted a huge gathering of ‘boy racers’ who had gathered in the Cotswolds[1]. Officers have since said patrols in the area will continue to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
There were reports of around 200 racers at a meet in Whelford on Sunday (May 14). These meetings can typically create noise, disturbance and a road safety risk.
Gloucestershire police said a ‘large number’ of police resources were sent to the area, near Fairford, to deal with the issue. They have since issued a Community Alert[2] in a bid to reassure residents.
The Police Helicopter and drones were deployed to disrupt the gathering. A Section 35 Dispersal Notice for anti-social behaviour was also put in place for 48 hours to prevent further issues in the area.
The Local Neighbourhood Police Team said it will conduct additional patrols in the area and will follow up enforcement on offending vehicles. If you have any further information about this incident, complete the online form[4] quoting incident 468 of May 14.
Some drivers at such meets perform dangerous stunts and this coupled with the number of people can cause fear to the public, meaning the police a called as a result. ‘Cruising’ – when people in cars drive around areas in gropus, is not illegal but many of the cars do commit offences during the events, these can include speeding, handbrake turns and criminal damage.
