Yorkshire Wolds Railway gets ready to open next Sunday for 2023 …

Volunteers at the [1], which is [2]‘s only heritage railway, are getting ready to welcome visitors once again when the 2023 season opens at 10 am next Sunday, 9th April. Since the railway finished its 2022 season last October, members have been working hard to get the railway ready to welcome visitors, including painting, sanding, building, tracklaying, and everything in between. The railway is run entirely by volunteers and is located near Fimber in East Yorkshire on the B1248 not far from Wetwang on the A166 York to Driffield Road.

The Yorkshire Wolds Railway is always ready to get new people involved in running the railway.

Anyone who wishes to become a member of the railway, to volunteer, donate, or just find out more can find out more information on the railway’s website at https://www.yorkshirewoldsrailway.org.uk or by calling 01377 338053 for more. Membership and Media director Matthew Brown explained, “we are so fortunate to have many willing volunteers that have worked tirelessly through all weathers to give our visitors an even greater experience in 2023. One of many highlights being a train ride that thanks to much hard work, now extends to almost a quarter of a mile.

This has been made possible by the installation of a switch or point and means we can run the end of current line where passengers can watch a member of the crew throw the switch, and then continue the journey on a new section of track.”

This year, the railway has changed its opening times. Martyn Jones, Operations director explained that “we will be running trains and opening the visitor centre every Sunday and Bank Holiday from Easter until the end of October from 10 – 4. In a new addition, the visitor centre only will also be open every Wednesday from Easter until the end of October from 10 – 4.

Access to the visitor centre and car park is free, with rides priced from GBP4.50 or a day pass from GBP8.”

Katy Bowser, Business Development director went on to say that “since starting them, our driver experiences have proved so popular that we have had to set aside dedicated days to run them. Under the supervision of one of our friendly drivers, they give a great opportunity to get behind the controls of an actual locomotive and will be running on June 17, July 15 or September 16 where booking will be essential.” Phil Robson, Finance Director said “we are really thankful to all everyone that continues to support the YWR.

We are confident the changes made over winter will offer visitors new and old something different to what they have seen in previous years, and we have many exciting announcements due later in 2023 that we can’t wait to share!”
