Why police in Barnsley shut West Way A628 and footbridge as they …

Police have shut a bridge in Barnsley[1] after “concern” for an individual. Around 5am this morning (April 8) a person was spotted on the bridge and South Yorkshire Police officers rushed to the scene around 5.40am. An individual was found in the Westway area of Barnsley[2].

The footbridge has been closed for over three hours as well as Pitt Street. Officers closed the A628 in both directions between Summer Lane at the Town End Roundabout and New Street around 6.31am. After two and a half hours the A628 reopened around 9am.

Several police cars were spotted guarding the area and drivers used alternative routes. The individual found on the bridge has now been brought to safety, South Yorkshire Police report. Traffic management system Inrix said: “A628 West Way in both directions re-opened, police incident over between Summer Lane (Town End Roundabout) and New Street.

The footbridge over Westway is also closed to pedestrians at this time. Pitt Street remains closed.” A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police[4] said: “Emergency services were called at around 5.40am today (Saturday 8 April) following reports of concern for the welfare of an individual in the Westway area of Barnsley.

The individual has since been brought to safety.”
