Update on plan to repair huge Station Road potholes
A number of large potholes have developed on Station Road in Penketh, particularly on the section between the railway line and Walkers Lane. This is maintained by Network Rail, which says it will be conducting upgrades, according to Cllr Craig Lenihan, representing Penketh and Cuerdley. He has been campaigning over the issue, which he says is risking injury to cyclists and pedestrians, as well as damage to vehicles.
Posting on social media, he said: "As many will know, I have worked to have this road repaired many times over the last five years. "Each success delivered only minimal repairs. These repairs lasted less than the process took, which only exacerbates the overall condition.
"The road is owned by Network Rail, which means it is its responsibility to maintain the stretch from Walkers Lane to the railway. "These potholes are an immediate risk and a hazard for all users of this road. I have huge concerns about the welfare of pedestrians and cyclists who use this popular route.
"Vehicles are swerving to miss the holes, putting them at serious risk. I have shared these concerns with those responsible at Warrington Borough Council." The council's highways department inspected the road and produced a report, which was then provided to Network Rail.
Cllr Lenihan added: "Network Rail has accepted this report and confirmed that the road will be repaired. "No timescale has been provided, so in the latest communication I have asked that we explore other avenues, like enforcement, unless the repairs are imminent. "This is a long process, much longer than it should be considering the risk, but I will persist until this is resolved.
"In the meantime, please stay safe when using this route.
Walking on the opposite side of the road allows you to see oncoming vehicles and avoid any instances."
