Two trapped in M6 smash as lorry, van and cars collide
The M6 was closed for five hours on April 1 after emergency services were called to a crash. Traffic was mainly affected between Junction 17 and Junction 16, with police, fire crews, and paramedics being called to the incident. Both carriageways were closed following the incident over the weekend.
The southbound carriageway reopened first, with the northbound following. The collision involved three cars, three vans and an HGV. Drivers were warned about building congestion on the stretch, with measures being taken to release traffic.
The entry slip at Junction 17 was temporarily closed off. A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The road was closed in both directions between junctions 17 (Sandbach) and 16 (Stoke-on-Trent) following a multi-vehicle collision. “The incident occurred at 10.04am.
Three cars, three vans and one heavy goods vehicle were involved. Traffic officers and emergency services, including an air ambulance, attended the scene. “Vehicle recovery was carried out and an oil spillage cleared.
The northbound closure was lifted at 11.26am, and the southbound at 3.33pm.” National Highways also worked to release traffic which had been caught up in the congestion. A spokesperson said: “Traffic caught within the closure is now being released forwards past the scene of the collision in the outside lane.”
The Southbound carriageway reopened at around 15.28 on April 1. The road was reopened fully at around 18.29. A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “At 10am on Saturday 1 April police were called to reports of a collision on the M6 southbound between junctions 17 and 16.
Officers attended and found there had been a collision between five vehicles and two people were medically trapped. “Firefighters attended the scene and released the two casualties who were both passed to the care of paramedics. There are no details on the extent of their injuries.”
