Truck fire, then crash closes parts of Route 22 in Lehigh County …

Part of Route 22 were closed Tuesday morning in Lehigh County, first for a truck fire and then for a multi-vehicle crash.

The fire was reported at 5:30 a.m. in a box truck carrying cleaning supplies, Trooper Nate Branosky said. There were no injuries.

At one point all lanes were closed on Route 22 West between the Fullerton Avenue and Airport Road interchanges, in the Hanover Township part of the highway.

Traffic backups stacked up past the 15th street exit in Allentown on the westbound side, as eastbound drivers were slowing down near the fire.

A little after 7 a.m., the left lane on Route 22 West reopened, Branosky said. By 7:16 a.m., all lanes were open and the scene was cleared.

Twenty minutes later, a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a box truck was reported on Route 22 East near Cedar Crest Boulevard.

All lanes were closed by 7:45 a.m. as emergency crews responded and began trying to rescue the trapped box truck driver, Branosky said.
