Traffic is now flowing again after four climate protesters were cleared from a central Wellington road that they had blocked on Monday morning.

But Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is warning that delays are possible while queued traffic clears.

Climate protesters had blocked the corner of Cuba and Vivian Street, the exit route from the urban motorway. Traffic had to be redirected at the Victoria Street lights.

Four Restore Passenger Rail protesters were initially blocking the intersection and one had glued themselves to the asphalt.

Cars on this key route through the city backed up and vented their frustration by blaring their horns.

One person walked up to the protesters to harangue them.

In a statement, the group’s spokesperson justified their action, saying “we cannot sit idle while those in Government endanger our safety. Climate collapse equals social collapse.”

They have also blocked the motorway near the Terrace Tunnel.

The group have called for the restoration of passenger rail services across regional New Zealand.

The Minister of Transport has met with the group after they agreed to briefly cease their actions, however spokesperson Rosemary Penwarden described the talks as “unproductive.”[6]

Protesters have also been warned by police that they could face up to 14 years imprisonment for disrupting traffic.[7] .
