The unassuming South London bus stop which might be the coolest …

Bus stations aren't often known for their beauty, they're where you find miserable-looking people huddled together to avoid the rain as they wait for their state-funded carriages to whisk them away. But every now and then people fall in love with their designs, for example Edmonton Green Bus Station looks like a bat. Vauxhall bus station is one which people like.

Its USP would definitely be the two-huge masts which people think makes it look like it caters to ski-jumpers. It was opened in 2004 and saw the centralisation of bus stops from nearby South Lambeth Road, Wandsworth Road, and Vauxhall Bridge, among others. Just a short walk from Vauxhall Tube station, the bus station is easily accessible for commuters and travellers alike.

It also provides direct access to a range of local amenities including restaurants, shops and leisure facilities. The bus station opened in 2005

The station itself is bright and modern, with a range of facilities designed to make travel as comfortable and convenient as possible. Passengers can access real-time information about bus routes and arrival times, while waiting areas are equipped with comfortable seating and ample space to move around.

Vauxhall bus station is also well connected to other transport links, making it an important interchange for passengers travelling across London. It provides easy access to the Victoria line[2], the National Rail network and the River Thames[3], with a range of nearby bus stops and taxi ranks. But despite the immensely positive benefits to the area, the station is under threat.

There have been plans to demolish it in February 2011. It was reported that the station may be flattened to make way for a GBP20m 'linear walkway' in the area: These plans were swiftly abandoned in the way of a proposal to turn it into a 'lively riverside' town centre.

It's yet to be touched, but demolition is always a concern from locals who think spreading the bus stops on smaller, quieter roads would lead to a rise in crime. Have a story? Email [email protected][4]
