TfL issues London Underground and traffic update for Coronation

Transport for London (TfL) says all of its services will operate as planned on the day of King Charle’s Coronation (Saturday, May 6), as no engineering works will take place. However, it is warning that there will be major diversions and possible station closures to prevent overcrowding in the Westminster area, urging passengers to check before travelling. Almost all roads[1] around St James’s Park, Westminster and Victoria will be closed to traffic on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6.

As part of the Bank Holiday weekend festivities, streets across the capital may close to traffic to host street parties[2], so motorists should expect journeys to take longer through residential areas. On Sunday, May 7, there will be a Coronation Concert[3] at Windsor Castle, with trains expected to be busy between Paddington and Windsor Central (Elizabeth line and GWR), and Waterloo and Windsor Riverside (SWR). Tube services will be busier than usual

Westminster, Green Park, Charing Cross, Embankment, Victoria, Hyde Park[5] Corner (exit only), Knightsbridge, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Temple and Marble Arch stations are expected to be exceptionally busy on Coronation Day (Saturday, May 6) with TfL advising visitors to walk instead where possible.

St James’s Park station will be closed all day. Cyclists will also be affected as until Monday, May 15, there will be temporary changes to Cycleway 3 around Buckingham Palace[6] and Constitution Hill. These are to support the London Marathon[7] and Coronation events.

Buses are also expected to divert or be terminated short of their usual destinations as Coronation events take place. Victoria Coach Station will remain open to coaches, but journeys will take longer due to likely diversions en route.

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla visiting Harrow in December 2022Harrow Council has agreed to waive the GBP1,200 road closure fee so residents can have street parties to celebrate the King’s coronation – this is a situation we may see across the capital, so TfL is warning motorists to expect journeys to take longer

Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: “We are delighted that London is hosting ceremonial events for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles[8] III and Queen Camilla, and look forward to welcoming visitors and Londoners alike onto the transport network for this historic occasion. “We expect central London to be very busy and the large-scale events will mean road closures in central London, so I’d advise people to check before they travel. I’d also encourage Londoners and those visiting to mark the celebrations to make the most of the public transport options, as there are no planned closures.”
