Smackover Highway accident causes truck to overturn
A three-vehicle accident on Smackover Highway caused a dump truck to overturn, barely missing the fence around the Sumac Mart, early Friday morning. Smackover Police responded at 6:35 a.m. to the accident, which involved a log truck, pickup truck and the dump truck, said Officer Cody Braswell. "A small pickup truck ran into the side of the log truck... and then the dump truck came over the hill, tried to dodge it and when he tried to dodge it, he lost control, flipped over," Braswell said.
Braswell said Bradley Cook, the pickup driver; Carl Banks, the log truck driver; and James Fowler, the dump truck driver, only suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident. Sheretha Morgan, an employee at Sumac Mart, said she saw the dump truck drive into the ditch and turn over. Braswell noted that the log truck didn't lose any of its haul, but the dump truck did lose the dirt it was hauling.
"The truck mainly just hit the middle part of the trailer," he said about the log truck. The accident occurred directly in front of the Murphy Sumac Mart at 4374 Smackover Highway. Braswell said the dump truck barely missed the fence around the convenience store.
"It just messed up the grass a little bit," he said.
Union County Sheriff's deputies also responded to the accident.
A UCSO dispatcher said that since the wreck occurred in Smackover, only the Smackover PD generated a report.
