Rail passengers can plan trips to venues with new website

Getting around Gloucestershire when you don’t have a car can be difficult at the best of times. It means relying on trains and buses[1] to get to those must-see destinations you’ve always wanted to visit. Now an interactive online platform has been launched for those seeking leisure time in Gloucestershire[2].

Called TrainTripper, the website is designed to promote car-free leisure trips, provide transport information[3] while promoting Gloucestershire businesses and highlight tourist attractions in the county. What’s more, at any of the nine stations including Gloucester[4], Cheltenham[5], Kemble, Stroud[6], Stonehouse[7], Ashchurch for Tewkesbury[8], Moreton-in-Marsh, Cam and Dursley and Lydney[9] – users can create their own personal itinerary of places to explore, eat and stay. Launched by Gloucestershire Community Rail Partnership, the organisation said that with “train travel at the heart of the platform”, it aims to “promote sustainable travel and active forms of transport such as walking and cycling, for visitors to reach their chosen destination”.

Hannah McDonnell, executive director at Gloucestershire Community Rail Partnership said: “The long-term aim of TrainTripper is to generate sustainable tourism across the county, support local business and help people fall in love again with their journeys by train”.

TrainTripper itself is funded by Great Western Railway and Cross Country Trains, plus the website has been developed in partnership with Visit Gloucestershire as part of their sustainability and Climate Action agenda. Steve Gardner-Collins, Director of Visit Gloucestershire said about the launch: “I’m thrilled to see the launch of such an innovative and fun platform to drive tourism in Gloucestershire. The list of carefully curated places to eat, stay and explore make it really easy for users to find great places to visit, and support local businesses at the same time.

By promoting travel by train, the platform and our work with GCRP supports Gloucestershire’s aspirations to reduce carbon emissions and be net zero by 2045″.
