A person who was discovered on the railway lines close to Cheltenham[1] this morning (April 19) has died. British Transport Police[2] officers had been called to the scene at around 11.08am[3] after receiving reports of a “casualty on the tracks”[4]. They later confirmed that “sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.” Currently, work is ongoing to try identifying the body and prepare a file for the coroner. It is not yet known if the death is being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police[5] said: “Officers were called to the line near Cheltenham[6] at 11.08am following reports of a casualty on the tracks. “Officers attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. We are now working to identify the person and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Many rail passengers travelling thorough the Gloucestershire area have been experiencing sizeable delays to their journeys, as emergency services closed off the lines between Cheltenham Spa and Ashchurch for Tewkesbury in order to deal with the incident. Earlier on, CrossCountry stated there were delays of up to 90 minutes, adding that customers “can travel on any reasonable route with Great Western Railway and Chiltern Railways via Oxford”. “Customers can also travel on any reasonable route via London Paddington and London Euston, with London Underground connections,” the service operator said. “Ticket acceptance has also been granted by Transport for Wales for services between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central.”

The incident is ongoing.
