Part of Hope Valley line to close over the Easter holidays
Sections of a popular railway line used by people visiting the Peak District National Park will be closed on a number of dates across the Easter break. The Hope Valley Line connects Sheffield and Manchester via the Peak District stopping at picturesque destinations including Hathersage, Bamford and Edale[1]. Work on the line to facilitate the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade is set to continue in April, in a bid to remove several bottlenecks on the route to allow for more reliable passenger journeys between Sheffield and Manchester.
One of the main improvements will be a railway loop between Bamford and Hathersage[2], allowing passenger trains to overtake slower freight trains along the line. The first phase of track installation has now been completed for the Bamford passing loop. This month work includes track installation near to Dore and Totley station and West View Lane and culvert extension work in Bamford.
To facilitate construction work, Network Rail will be closing a section of the Hope Valley line, meaning no trains will run between Sheffield and Hope stations. The following dates are when the closure will be in place:
- Friday April 7 – from 11pm
- Saturday April 8
- Sunday April 9
- Monday April 10 – till 5am
- Saturday April 15 – from 11pm
- Sunday April 16
- Monday April 17 – till 5am
On both weekends, Northern Trains will be running train services between Manchester Piccadilly and Hope, while rail replacement buses will run between Sheffield and Hope. East Midlands Rail will be providing rail replacement bus services between Sheffield and Stockport.
Expected disruption will include noise from excavation work, drilling, train movements with noise from train horns and running engines, and heavy construction machinery movement. There will also be freight trains and other rail machinery in the area. Sign up for our Peak District Live newsletter to make sure you never miss a big story.[4]
