Milton Keynes fire in Fairfields sees Watling Street shut due to gas …

A house fire in Milton Keynes caused a busy road to be shut for hours. The incident saw an external gas meter catch ablaze before spreading to other parts of the property. The fire took place at around 3.20pm on Saturday, April 8 at a home in Saturn Avenue in Fairfields[1].

Five fire crews were sent to the scene as smoke could be seen in the area. Officers from Thames Valley Police[2] instated a road closure on V4 Watling Street between Apollo Avenue and H2 Millers Way. The closure remained in place until around 7.50pm.

The blaze began when the meter, located on the side of a two-storey detached home, caught fire. The fire then spread and affected the living room, a bedroom wall cavity and the roof of the home. The fire service sent three fire engines from the West Ashland Blue Lights Hub, as well as two from other MK fire stations.

A Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service[4] spokesperson said: “The firefighters used eight sets of breathing apparatus, one main jet, two hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera, a turntable ladder and fog spikes. “One appliance and crew from Newport Pagnell[5], one from Broughton and three from West Ashland attended, along with two officers. Smoke was issuing when they arrived.

“An external gas meter, on the side of a two-storey detached house, had caught fire. The ground-floor living room, first-floor bedroom wall cavity and roof of the house were affected by the fire. “Thames Valley Police attended to establish a road closure[6] while the firefighters worked at the scene.

The gas provider also attended the incident and isolated the gas supply.”
