M6 to stay closed overnight in Staffordshire after lorry inferno

Motorists are being warned that part of the M6 in Staffordshire[1] will remain closed overnight after a crashed lorry erupted into a fireball. The HGV burst into flames under a bridge after it collided with a car on the northbound carriageway[2] between junctions 13 and 12. The Midlands Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene and landed on the motorway before flying off.

Pictures from the scene showed thick black smoke engulfing the lorry which had overturned with the cab becoming completely detached. Emergency services including firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene near Stafford at around 11.30am on Sunday. Drivers were then stuck in queues for hours as they queued to exit the motorway.

The police and ambulance service are yet to release statements on the collision.

Recovery work on the M6

In an update this evening, National Highways have confirmed the M6 will stay closed throughout the night while recovery work continues. A spokesman said: “Work to recover the lorry is expected to be protracted and the closure will remain in place for a considerable time. “The northbound carriageway will remain closed overnight between J12 and J13 for ongoing recovery and emergency resurfacing work.”

Diversion Route

Road users are advised to follow the Hollow Triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

  • Exit M6 at J12 and take the exit to the A5 westbound
  • Continue along the A5 westwards to its junction with the A449 (Gailey)
  • Take the exit to the A449 northbound and continue to the M6 J13
