Lorry cut in half after flipping over and catching fire in M6 crash

Dramatic images show the aftermath of a crash on the M6 which have left drivers stuck in four-hour queues. A lorry burst into flames after being involved in a collision on the northbound carriageway[1] between junction 12 for Cannock and junction 13 for Stafford this morning (April 16). An air ambulance landed at the scene following the smash, which happened at around 11.40am.

Emergency personnel have been working at the scene on the M6 northbound ever since. The condition of those involved in the crash is not yet known. In the latest update, National Highways said the northbound stretch remained closed for the ‘complex recovery of the lorry’.

A spokesman added: “Closure will remain in place for several hours today. There are approximately three miles of slow moving traffic on approach to J12.” Philip Newell – who has his 18-month-old baby in the car – has been attempting to get to Brewood since 12.30pm.

He told StokeonTrentLive: “I have the greatest of sympathy for those involved in the collision. It must be bad. “But what I can’t understand is how National Highways didn’t alert drivers as soon as possible.

I’ve been on the road for three-and-a-half hours. I’m getting very frustrated and so is my daughter. She’s run out of patience like me.

“The updates from National Highways say there are 30-minute delays but it’s taken us hours to move half a mile. I joined at Junction 11 and I’m now in the queue to get off at 12. We’re finally in the single lane but it could be ages yet.

The back-up behind me will be here for hours.”

The aftermath of the crash on the M6

Images from the scene show the lorry cab separated from the rest of the vehicle which came to a rest under a bridge. Another displays an engine sitting on the tarmac. A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M6 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between J12 and J13 due to a road traffic collision involving a Heavy Goods Vehicle which has overturned and caught fire.

“Central Motorway Police Group, Fire & Rescue, Air Ambulance and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene. The southbound carriageway has been released. Traffic within the northbound closure is currently being released past the scene.”
