Fundraiser created to help survivors of fatal house fire

A fundraiser has been set up to help the survivors of a fatal[1] house fire that devastated a local Lithuanian community. The incident took place in Spring Gardens, Spalding[2], and a 56-year-old Lithuanian man was confirmed dead while a number of other inhabitants made it to safety. A joint investigation was launched between Lincolnshire Police[3] and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue[4] into the cause of the fire which took place on April 11.

It has since been confirmed that the fire started in a bedroom and that the fire was not being treated as suspicious. Laima Kontrauskaite, the deputy of Liepa, Spalding’s Lithuanian community group, has decided to start a fundraiser[5] to help the survivors of the fire and the family of the man who died. She hopes that people of all nationalities can come together to support the victims of this tragic incident.

Poll – Will you be watching the King’s coronation?[6] She said: “I’ve only recently joined [Liepa] but they have been helping people for the past two years now. I thought let’s start up a GoFundMe and try to collect some money for the family and survivors.

“If we can help just help a little bit then that would be great, there is a lot of damage to the house. It has been a shock to the community. I’m not asking just for financial help, I want people to share it as much as I can so more people know.

“Only Lithuanian people have donated so far, it would be great to see other nationalities come together to raise some money and help.” Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Ryan Stacey, said: “We’re very much saddened by this fatality and our thoughts are with family and friends at this difficult time. Two crews from Spalding and a crew from Crowland attended this incident and along with police colleagues, the building’s other inhabitants were able to be rescued and taken to safety.”
