Full list of changes to bin collections over Easter weekend

Some bin collections will be affected by the Easter weekend, Lincolnshire councils have said. Both Good Friday (April 7) and Easter[1] Monday (April 11) will be bank holidays[2] in 2023, meaning we’re in for a four-day weekend. It’ll be a chance to bask in the sunshine, but you don’t want to get caught out and left with an overflowing rubbish bin.

Though bin men tend to work on bank holidays, some collection dates have been brought forward. However, most households should be unaffected. You can find the full list of changes below.

Lincoln bin collection dates

According to a spokesperson for the City of Lincoln Council[4], bin collections will be carried out in Lincoln as if it was a regular week. This means that any bins scheduled for collection in the county’s capital[5] on Friday or Monday will still be emptied as normal.

Sleaford and North Kesteven bin collection dates

Sleaford[6] and the wider district of North Kesteven[7] will be one of the few areas affected by a change to collection days. According to the district council, collections of purple and purple-lidded bins that would be collected on Easter Monday will instead be collected on Saturday, April 8.

There will be no change for residents whose black bins are scheduled to be emptied on Good Friday. The council has also asked residents to make sure their bins are on the kerb by 6.30am on the appropriate day.

Grantham, Stamford and South Kesteven bin collection dates

There will be some changes to waste bin and bag collections in Grantham[8] and other South Kesteven[9] towns. Bin men will be coming by as normal on Good Friday, though collections the following week will be pushed back a day.

Between Easter Monday and Friday, April 14, black bins, green bins and pink bags will be collected 24 hours later each day.

Skegness, Louth and East Lindsey bin collection dates

Bin collections for residents in East Lindsey[10] and on Lincolnshire’s coast are not scheduled to change. A spokesperson for East Lindsey District Council[11] confirmed that bin men will be coming by as normal.

Boston and the borough bin collection dates

The same can be said for the town of Boston[12] and villages in the surrounding borough. According to a spokesperson for Boston Borough Council[13], there are no scheduled changes to bin collection dates over the Easter weekend.

Spalding and South Holland bin collection dates

Bin collections in Spalding[14], Holbeach and the surrounding district of South Holland[15] won’t be carried out on the bank holidays, meaning they will be pushed back a day.

According to the council’s calendar, Good Friday’s collection will take place instead on Saturday, April 8. Bins scheduled for Easter Monday will be collected on Tuesday, April 10, and this pattern will continue through the week. The final load of affected bins, originally scheduled for Friday, April 14, will be picked up on Saturday, April 15.

Collections should then return to normal.

Gainsborough, Market Rasen and West Lindsey bin collection dates

According to West Lindsey District Council[16], there will be no changes to bin schedules in the district over the Easter weekend. The only changes pencilled in for 2023 relate to a two-week period around Christmas and the first week of 2024.

What can and can’t go in bins?

According to North Kesteven District Council[17], not everything that comes with an Easter egg can be recycled and it’s important to get it correct. Cardboard packaging should be disposed of in a purple bin unless it is foiled, dirty or glittery, in which case it should go in the black bin.

If the insert is made of cardboard, it can go in the purple bin – if it is made of black or brown plastic, it should go in the black bin. Easter egg foil can be disposed of in green bins, as long as it is clean. As with the cardboard packaging, if it is dirty, it should go in the black bin.

Full guidance on what can and can’t go in your bins can be found on the district council’s website[18].

Residents should also check with their own councils to make sure they are up to speed with any changes.
