The European Commission has announced that it will grant an amount of EUR190 million to complement the railway infrastructure of Slovakia that connects the Zilina-Teplicka railway, a main trans-European transport network.

According to the Commission, the first phase of the project includes the completion of earthworks, the old track will be dismantled, and the supporting structures will be placed under the railway tracks in the Strazov-Zilina and Budatin-Zilina railway sections and at the Zilina station. At the same time, two platforms and extended noise barriers will be completed, while six railway bridges, four road bridges, as well as one new road bridge and six underpasses will be built or reconstructed.
The EU Commission also noted that five pedestrian underpasses will be built and expanded in Slovakia, and an electronic signalling system combined with a signalling device of the European Traffic Management System (ERTMS) will be installed for the Zilina railway node. The same authority said that this project, in general, aims to increase the capacity of the railway network and the speed of travel by shortening the travel time and improving the safety and reliability of railway services. This also means that by using the train, there will be a reduction in nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions.
Furthermore, another thing that will ensure railway interoperability is a new alternative current supply, which will also reduce energy costs. EU funding will also support improving access to stations and trains for people with reduced mobility. "This project strengthens the railway infrastructure in the Zilina region of Slovakia and will have a direct benefit for citizens thanks to a faster, safer and greener travel by train.
Once again Cohesion Policy improves concretely the life of citizens on the ground" Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira pointed out in this regard. In December last year, the EU Commission approved an investment of more than[2] EUR[3]109 million to build a new circular railway section in Palermo, Italy[4]. In this regard, he said that the EU is financing the first of the two construction phases needed to complete the Palermo Railway Ring circuit.
The new section of the Palermo Rail Ring also aims to strengthen the city's transport infrastructure.
