Devon’s magistrates courts[1] sentence people for a wide variety of criminal offences. This week’s list includes drink and drug drivers and domestic violence offenders. The magistrates have a range of punishments and rehabilitation measures at their disposal.
They can impose unlimited fines, bans, community orders and up to a year in prison. The court works with the probation service to offer programmes such as Thinking Skills and Building Better Relationships. All criminal cases start at the magistrates court.

Julie Denise Orchard, Penstone, Colebrooke. Age: 56. On 09/03/2022 at Penstone unlawfully and maliciously wounded a male.
Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for 26 weeks suspended for 18 months. Abstain from consuming any alcohol throughout a period of 120 days.
Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. Joe Cross, Smithincott. Age: 26.
On 02/04/2023 at Uffculme drove a motor vehicle after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP120.
Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 14 months. David Greaves, Milbury Farm Meadow, Exminster. Age: 50.
On 10/10/2022 at Exeter drove a motor vehicle on a road, namely Main Road, Exminster, after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 116 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order made.
Have treatment for alcohol dependency. Fined GBP150. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 28 months.
Stacey Ann Scott, Merlin Crescent, Exeter. Age: 33. On 01/04/2023 at South Street Exeter assaulted an emergency worker, namely a police constable acting in the exercise of her functions as such a worker, by beating her.
Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Have treatment for alcohol dependency.
Fined GBP180. To pay compensation of GBP100. Kai Preston, Lutyens Drive, Paignton.
Age: 27. On 13/10/2022 at Exeter drove a motor vehicle, namely an Audi on a road, namely Cowick Lane, when the proportion of a controlled drug, namely Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in blood, was not less than 2.3 Ugs, exceeded the specified limit. Plea: Guilty.
Fined GBP121. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months. James Andrew Short, NFA.
Age: 40. On 03/04/2023 at High Street, Exeter, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, had in a public place an offensive weapon, namely a hammer Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for five months suspended for 18 months.
Glen Gareth Jones, Charlotte Street, Crediton. Age: 31. On 26/12/2022 at Exeter assaulted a female by beating her.
Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP200. To pay compensation of GBP100.

Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 100 hours within the next 12 months.
John Albert Patterson, Broadmead Gardens, Lynton. Age: 54. On 04/04/2023 at Barnstaple, had in a public place, namely Golden Lion Tap, The Square, Barnstaple, a loaded air weapon, namely .177 BB CO2 air pistol.
Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP80. Tyler Chalmers Wood, Morwenna Park Road, Northam, Bideford.
Age: 24. On 27/12/2022 at Bideford, assaulted an emergency worker, namely police officer, acting in the exercise of her functions as such a worker, by beating her. Plus assaulted a male by beating.
Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP90. To pay compensation of GBP100.
Stephen Kent, Lundy Close, Gorwell, Barnstaple. Age: 61. On 07/12/2022 at Barnstaple failed to comply with the Community Protection Notice in that sat on a bench at Barnstaple Library drinking from a can of alcohol, refused to hand over the can of lager or dispose of it.
Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP200. Jed Victor Shaddick, Nfa, Ilfracombe.
Age: 32. On 21/02/2023 at Summerland Street assaulted a female by beating her. Plus criminal damage.
Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Building Better Relationships Programme.
Restraining order made. Fined GBP50. To pay compensation of GBP480.
Aztec Apache Chaos Green-Easden, The Green, Bridgerule, Holsworthy. Age: 23. On 08/08/2022 at Holsworthy drove a BMW on a road, namely A3072, Brandis Corner Bradford, without due care and attention.
Plea: Guilty. Fined GBP323. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months.
Alastair Michael Joseph Harrison, Magdalen Street, Exeter. Age: 35. On 02/04/23 at Exeter, stole meat to the value of GBP54, belonging to Co-Op.
Plea: Guilty. Discharged conditionally for 11 months. To pay compensation of GBP54.
Paul Royston Johnson, Nfa. Age: 30. Between 20/10/2021 and 04/02/2022 at Sidmouth breached a restraining order.
Assaulted an emergency worker, assaulted a male, criminal damage. Shoplifting, assaulted a female. Plea: Guilty.
Committed to prison for 24 weeks. Scott William Morris, Fore Street, Kingskerswell, Newton Abbot. Age: 26.
On 28/07/2019 at A38 had possession of a quantity of cannabis a controlled drug of class B with intent to supply it. Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for 26 weeks suspended for 12 months.
Carry out unpaid work for 160 hours. APRIL 24 Luke Robert Down, Great Western Hotel, Exeter.
Age: 36. On 23/04/2023 at Exeter Police Station, assaulted an emergency worker, namely a police constable, acting in the exercise of his functions as such a worker, by beating him. Plus criminal damage.
Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for six weeks. To pay compensation of GBP160.
Kevin Shane Fitzgerald, Cheshire Road, Exmouth. Age: 39. On 19/08/2022 at Canal Walk, Tiverton assaulted a male by beating him.
Plus drink driving. Plea: Guilty. Community order made.
Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 36 months. Abstain from consuming any alcohol throughout a period of 120 days. To pay compensation of GBP200.
Victor Zeyu Nelson, c/o Cathedral Yard, Exeter. Age: 20. On 03/03/2023 at South Street assaulted a female occasioning her actual bodily harm.
On 08/03/2023 at Exeter, stole Peppa Pig soft toy, to the value of GBP4.50, belonging to The Works, High Street. Plus using insulting words or behaviour. Plea: Guilty.
Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 120 hours. Lewis John Whiteway, Calverleigh.
Age: 33. On 24/03/2023 at Calverleigh drove a Vauxhall Astra dangerously on a road and drink driving. Plea: Guilty.
Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 150 hours. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 22 months.
Thomas Jamie Rowledge, Hill Crest, Tiverton. Age: 36. On 21/02/2023 at Tiverton assaulted a female.
Plea: Guilty.
Discharged conditionally for 24 months.
