Restore Passenger Rail protesters have had their plans to block traffic in Johnsonville foiled by police on Wednesday morning.

Stuff understands the protest group had planned to block a major route in Johnsonville on Wednesday morning, but police intervened before they could block the road.

Restore Passenger Rail organiser Rosemary Penwarden was taken away in a police car.

A police spokesperson said police spoke to a group of people gathered in a carpark in Johnsonville on Wednesday morning. One person was arrested for breaching bail conditions.

Police confirmed there was no disruption to traffic in Johnsonville on Wednesday morning.

Inquiries were being made into any planned protest action, police said.

The Restore Passenger Rail group has been calling for the restoration and upgrade of the national passenger rail network and a move to make local public transport free.

Over the past two weeks, the group has blocked traffic on several key arterial routes in Wellington including Adelaide Rd, the Terrace Tunnel and Vivian St.

Several members of the group have been arrested and charged with endangering transport[4] a result of their recent protest action.
