Truck carrying 2,200 gallons of fuel overturns in Suquamish neighborhood

SUQUAMISH - A Cooper Fuel truck flipped over as it was backing down a driveway in a neighborhood along Sandy Hook Road Thursday morning. The vehicle, which the Poulsbo Fire Department said was holding 2,200 gallons of heating fuel, came to rest upside down against a tree, sparking concerns about a spill.

Battalion Chief Chris Rahl said that the truck was heavily damaged and bent but noted that its tank was intact and not leaking. A small amount of diesel fuel from the truck spilled, but Rahl said at about 1 p.m. that there were no other negative environmental impacts "at this point." A company will drain the fuel from the tank before the vehicle is moved, he said.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Michael Medical Center for evaluation. The driver had been backing down a driveway to service some fuel tanks when it appeared that the truck began to slide and the driver lost control, Rahl said.
