NEW LONDON -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg plans to visit Connecticut on Wednesday as part of a Biden administration tour touting the president's accomplishments on infrastructure. Buttigieg will hold a news conference with state and federal officials highlighting £158 million in federal money that will go toward repairs of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, which links New London and Groton over the Thames River.
The project is among four nationwide that received federal money under the first round of funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
"The bridges in this round were chosen for their importance to local communities and regional economies, and for the essential role they play in moving goods in our national supply chain," the federal Department of Transportation said in a news release. "This competitive grant funding comes on top of billions of dollars in formula funding that states have already received from the infrastructure law to help fix tens of thousands of bridges, large and small." While Buttigeg is in Connecticut, President Joe Biden plans to visit the Cincinnati area, and Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Chicago to underscore projects there. Mitch Landrieu, the White House's infrastructure coordinator, also plans to visit California with outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday to highlight federal funding for the Golden Gate Bridge.
