Renault Trucks launches new powertrain delivering up to 4% fuel savings

Renault Trucks has unveiled a new-generation powertrain for its T, T High, C and K ranges, promising fuel savings of up to 4% while improving driver comfort and reducing CO2 emissions. The updated driveline combines a new DE13 R engine with the latest generation Optidriver automated gearbox and enhanced predictive driving technologies. Renault Trucks said the development forms part of its wider strategy to improve the efficiency of diesel-powered vehicles while continuing to expand its electric truck offering.

Antoine Duclaux, President of Renault Trucks, said: "The decarbonisation of road transport relies on several complementary levers. Alongside the acceleration of the development of our electric offer, we continue to improve the energy efficiency of our combustion-engine vehicles in order to help our customers reduce their fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and total cost of ownership from today." The new DE13 R engine is available with outputs of up to 540hp and 2,800Nm of torque.

Renault Trucks said the engine has been developed using new materials designed to improve durability, while a revised fuel injection system enhances combustion efficiency and reduces energy losses. A more powerful Optibrake+ engine brake is now fitted as standard, providing improved vehicle control, particularly on demanding terrain. The new-generation Optidriver transmission also benefits from updated software, with Renault Trucks claiming gear changes are up to 20% faster than the previous version.

To further improve efficiency, the new powertrain incorporates Optivision+ predictive cruise control, which uses topographical data and road information to optimise gear selection, acceleration and vehicle speed. A Predictive Engine Stop Start system, available on T and T High models, automatically switches off the engine during freewheeling phases to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining essential vehicle functions. According to Renault Trucks, the combined technologies can deliver fuel savings and CO2 reductions of up to 4% compared with the previous generation, depending on the application.

The DE13 R engine is also compliant with the latest NNR3 noise emissions standard, helping to reduce vehicle noise levels. Alongside efficiency improvements, Renault Trucks has focused on driver comfort. The manufacturer said the combination of higher torque, faster gear changes and quieter operation creates a smoother driving experience.

The updated models can also be specified with Smart Steering, which improves directional stability and integrates driver assistance systems including lane correction and adaptive cruise control.

Renault Trucks said the new powertrain will be available across its long-haul and construction vehicle ranges as part of its 2027 model year offering.
