Kafé Kumho Truckstop Review: Applegreen A1

Kumho Tyrres

Welcome Break (Applegreen) Services on the A1 northbound, just outside of Newark, was extended and refurbished fairly recently and now offers a 24/7 service station, with HGV fuelling, and on-site Greggs, Burger King, Starbucks, and a Waitrose shop. There are 44 HGV parking spots. The first two hours are free, and GBP27 for 24 hours thereafter.

The services are focused on car drivers, but they do have clean showers available (you can get the key from the counter). Inside is large and not particularly welcoming, just functional and designed to be a quick stop-off for those passing through. But it could be a good break from the cab while you eat.

The Waitrose shop isn't the cheapest, but it does have a good range of ready meals (if you can cook in your cab) plus the usual meal deals and fresh food. Greggs and Burger King are easy options if you aren't trying to eat healthily(!). You could also walk just over the bridge towards Fernwood to visit the Tawny Owl pub for a more homely menu and atmosphere.

Accessing these services going northbound is easy enough, with good slip-roads off and back on again. However, those travelling southbound will have a bit of a faff as you have to go into Fernwood and tackle a tight roundabout back over the bridge. Then exiting, you have to go back over the

bridge into Fernwood and get onto the B6326, going south for almost a mile before rejoining the A1.

The nearest other truck stops are Newark Lorry Park (NG24 1BL) and Colsterworth Truck Stop (NG33 5JN).
