Live: 6 people hospitalised on M23 in pile-up involving a lorry, minibus and cars near Gatwick Airport

Six people have been hospitalised following a pile-up involving a lorry, a minibus and a people carrier on the M23. Police and air ambulance attended and the crash has meant massive delays near Gatwick Airport. The accident happened on the northbound side of the M23 between Junction 9 for Gatwick Airport[1] and Junction 8 for the M25[2] at about 11.45am this morning (April 18).

Surrey Police has issued an appeal for witnesses of the incident. Traffic was halted for just under three hours from 11.45am but is now slowly being released past the incident via two out of the four lanes. The motorway[3] was fully closed both ways with traffic trapped behind the accident on the northbound side but the southbound side has since been reopened.

There is congestion leading all the way back to Junction 11 for Pease Pottage with delays along A22 past Blindley Heath as traffic seeks alternative routes Godstone and Reigate are also heavily congested. National Highways has said the incident is expected to clear between 5.30pm and 5.45pm with normal traffic conditions expected between 6.45pm and 7pm. At that time it will be over 7 hours since the incident happened.
