M6 stretch to remain closed overnight after serious lorry crash

A key stretch of the M6[1] will remain closed overnight, March 12, after a serious lorry crash this morning. National Highways confirmed the M6 southbound would stay closed between junctions 14 and 13 following the crash, which saw a lorry driver taken to hospital[2] with 'potentially serious' injuries. Emergency crews were called to the scene, between J14, near Penkridge, and J13, for Stafford, just after 9am today, Tuesday, March 12.

Two HGVs were involved in the collision, with firefighters having to free one driver, who was rushed to hospital. The second driver was not injured. National Highways confirmed on Tuesday evening that junction 13 to 14 would remain closed on the southbound side to allow for emergency resurfacing.

Police investigations at the scene were ongoing and a hydroblaster was treating the carriageway. Diversions were in place. Traffic was advised to exit the M6 southbound at junction 14 and take the exit to the A34 eastbound, then continue on the A34 until the roundabout with the A513, turn right and continue on the A34 southbound into Stafford then continue on the A34 around the town of Stafford until the Queensway island with the A449. There a second diversion was being picked up due to a local authority closure of the A449.

This diversion will continue on the A34 south until the junction with Silkmore Lane, then join Silkmore Lane southbound and continue onward to join the A449 Wolverhampton Road to continue onward and re-join the M6 at junction 13. Drivers can also consider leaving the M6 at junction 15 and taking alternative routes from there. A West Midlands Ambulance Service[5] spokesperson said of this morning's incident: "We were called at 9.11am to a road traffic collision involving two lorries on the M6 between junctions 14 and 13 in Stafford.

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a critical care car from Midland Air Ambulance attended the scene. "Upon arrival we found a man who was the driver of one of the lorries. He was extricated from the vehicle by the fire service.

Once extricated, he was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained potentially serious injuries.

"He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.

The second driver did not require assessment."
