M4 hour of delays in Bristol and diversion route following serious collision

The M4 remains closed following a serious collision on Saturday lunchtime. National Highways is advising road users to follow a diversion[1] in place following the crash between J19 (for the M32 near Bristol[2]) and J20 (for the M5 near Almondsbury).

The collision which occurred at 12:56pm this afternoon involved five vehicles. The westbound carriageway remains closed with emergency services on the scene.

There is a one-hour delay stretching back four miles on the approach to the scene. Traffic which is currently stuck at the collision is currently being released.

National Highways said: “The westbound carriageway will need to be closed for some time and we would advise road users to avoid travelling in the local area and use alternative routes if possible.”

The diversion is as follows:

  • Exit the M4 westbound at J19 and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the M32, towards Bristol.

  • Exit the M32 at J1 and take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A4174 westbound, towards Filton.

  • Remain on the A4174 for approximately 2 miles to the junction with the A38/Filton roundabout at Filton.

  • Take the third exit at the Filton roundabout onto the A38 northbound, towards Almondsbury

  • Remain on the A38 for approximately 3 miles to the M5 J16 and join the M5.

  • Take the first exit to join the M5 south towards the South West or the third exit onto the M5 north towards J16 to re-join the M4.
