Air ambulance lands at pub as man trapped in lorry after M53 crash

An air ambulance landed near the scene of a crash involving two lorries.

Emergency services were called to a crash on the M53, between junction 9 near to Station Road (Ellesmere Port[1]) and junction 8 near to Merseyton Road (Ellesmere Port Docks) at around 10.30am on Wednesday, February 14.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said the crash involved a heavy goods vehicle and a tipper truck. One of the vehicles had overturned causing oil to spill across the carriageway. An air ambulance also landed at the Green Oak Farm pub, near to the scene.

One man was trapped inside one of the vehicles and at around 1.20pm, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said they managed to free him using two specialist recovery vehicles.

The man was taken to Aintree[4] Hospital via air ambulance. His injuries are believed to be serious but not life changing. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were working with the Environment Agency to deal with the spillage, which it said had been contained.

The northbound carriageway is currently closed while recovery work is undertaken. A diversion is currently in place and drivers are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M53 northbound at J9.
  • At the M53 J9/A5032 roundabout, take the second exit and follow the A5032 northbound.
  • At the A5032/M53 J8 roundabout, take the second exit and re-join the M53 northbound.
