Yunesh Naidu: Father-of-two who was just 1km away from home is crushed to death in a horror crash in Rowville

A father-of-two was instantly killed when a 30-tonne truck collided with his car on a highway just one kilometre from his home.

Yunesh Naidu, 52, was entering Wellington Road in Rowville, in Melbourne's south east, when a truck hit him on an intersection at 8.50am on Thursday.

The truck is believed to have ran a red light while travelling west down the highway as Mr Naidu turned onto the road in his Kia sedan, causing the two to collide.

Mr Naidu's Kia flipped upside down and became lodged beneath the truck, which went on to smash into another car before hitting a pole and coming to a stop.

Nobody else was hurt in the fatal crash and the 27-year-old truckie from Dandenong is now helping police with their investigation.

Witnesses said they heard relentless honking in the moments before the crash which was followed by a 'big hit and a smash'.

'There were ambulance sounds everywhere, so some families will be very, very sad today,' one witness told 9News[2].

Another witness said a hairdresser driving her sedan was in the second car that got hit.

A Mercedes was also damaged after the pole the truck had collided with fell down and landed on top of it.

Multiple fire trucks, ambulances and police units responded to the crash and immediately shut down traffic.

Mr Naidu, a supply chain director, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now investigating whether the truck's breaks had been defective.

Friends of the truckie said he was an experienced driver who moved from India to Australia more than 10 years ago.

He is now being questioned by police at Knox Police Station.

Mr Naidu's death is the second in 12 hours on Victorian roads after a 22-year-old died[3] in Fitzroy North in Melbourne[4]'s inner-east at 11:30pm on Wednesday night.

Emergency responders said that the man's car had hit a pole, causing it to flip several times, and that the driver had died at the scene.
