Woman taken by air ambulance to hospital after M4 crash

A woman has been taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle accident shut the M4 westbound this morning. According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, the incident took place westbound between J42 A483 Swansea East / Briton Ferry and J44 A465 Llandarcy in Neath Port Talbot.

South Wales Police confirmed that the road traffic collision involved a lorry and two cars on the M4 westbound. The incident took place at around 9.25am this morning, and the motorway has now re-opened.

The force also confirmed that a 58-year-old woman has been taken to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff via an air ambulance, with her condition described as "non-life threatening". With the road closed in both directions, there was heavy congestion in the area with traffic reaching to J41 in Baglan/Pentyla on the M4 westbound.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 9.25am today emergency services were called following a road traffic collision which involved a lorry and two cars on the westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 42 and 43.

"A 58-year-old woman has been taken by air ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales at Cardiff. Her condition is described as non-life-threatening. The motorway was closed in both directions to allow the air ambulance to land. The motorway is now open."

The Wales Air Ambulance also confirmed they were at the scene. In a statement, a spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in that region today (10/01/2024). Our Cardiff-based crew were allocated at 09:25 and attended by air. They arrived at the scene at 09:49. Our involvement concluded at 10:39."
