Two people injured after M2 multi-vehicle crash in the snow

Two people have sustained injuries following a multi-vehicle crash on the M2 near Medway[1] this afternoon (January 8). A large emergency services response has been called to the scene on the London-bound carriageway[2] between Junction 3 for Chatham[3] and Rochester[4] and Junction 2 for Strood.

A road closure has been put in place while crews, including officers from Kent Police[5], attend the scene. Delays have built on approach while the key stretch of motorway remains shut.

Police have confirmed that two people have sustained injuries that are not described as life threatening following the crash. A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Officers are currently at the scene of a collision involving several vehicles on the westbound carriageway on the M2 near Chatham.

“Patrols and highways officers were called to the scene at 12.44pm on Monday 9 January 2024. Paramedics have also attended and the carriageway is currently closed between junctions 3 and 2 while emergency services deal with the incident.”

A diversion route has been implemented with traffic able to leave the motorway at Junction 3. The incident took place during a heavy flurry of snow[8] and the Met Office has this morning issued a new yellow weather warning for ice for Kent[9] as more wintry showers are forecast.

A spokesperson for National Highways added: “The M2 in Kent is closed westbound between J3 (Chatham) and J2 (Rochester) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services including Kent Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management.”
