Police officers in hospital after car flips on M62

Two police officers are in hospital after their patrol car flipped on the M62.

Emergency services were called to the motorway, near junction five (Roby Road), at around 3pm on Tuesday, January 2, following reports of a police car crashing. Once emergency services arrived at the scene they found the police car on its side on a grass embankment.

Merseyside Police confirmed the car hit a metal barrier and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Two police officers were in the car when it crashed, but were able to release themselves from it before Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene.

The force has confirmed the police officers were taken to hospital with slight injuries as a precaution.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services attended a road collision involving a police vehicle on M62 westbound, near junction five today, Tuesday 2 January 2024. Just before 3pm it was reported that a police car had collided with a barrier. No other vehicles were involved.

"Two officers sustained slight injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution. A road closure was in place at junction five while the incident was being dealt with and it has now reopened.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact police via @MerPolCC on Twitter[3] (X) or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook[4], quoting log number 536 of 2 January 2024."

Traffic on the M62 was queuing back to The Rocket as emergency services responded to the incident. Witnesses reported being stuck in traffic for over an hour.
