Woman dies on A5 near M6 Toll and man ‘critical’ after BMW and Kia horror crash

A woman has died and a man has been left fighting for his life days before Christmas[1] after a horror crash involving two cars with a ‘dangerous driving’ arrest made. The collision took place on the A5 between Great Wyrley and Norton Canes in Staffordshire[2], near to the M6 Toll at around 11.20pm on Thursday (December 21).

A Kia and a black BMW collided on the eastbound A5, Watling Street, between the junction for the M6 Toll and The Turf roundabout by the Toby Carvery and B4154. The Kia had flipped over. Police fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

But sadly nothing could be done to save a woman in her 60s, who was inside the Kia. She was pronounced dead at the scene. While a man in his 20s, who was in the BMW, was left in a ‘critical condition’. Two more men were taken to hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance Service[4] said it was called to the incident at 11.25pm. It sent three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Intervention Team) trauma doctor, a Critical Care Paramedic and the Warwickshire[5] and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Car to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews discovered two cars that had been in collision, one of which had overturned. From that car, a woman was found to be in a critical condition and already receiving basic life support from fire service colleagues.

“Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it became apparent nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.”

The ambulance statement continued: “A man, from [the Kia], was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Walsall[7] Manor Hospital. From the second car, a man was treated for serious injuries, not believed to be life-threatening, and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital[8], Birmingham.

“A doctor travelled with the patient to help continue treatment en-route to hospital. A second man from the second car was taken to New Cross Hospital after being treated for injuries not believed to be serious.”

Now Staffordshire Police is appealing for witnesses to come forward. It said it had arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of ‘dangerous driving’.

In a statement, a Staffordshire Police[10] spokesperson said: “We are appealing for information following a fatal collision on the A5, Watling Street, on Thursday night (21 December). It happened between the M6 Toll entrance roundabout and the Turf roundabout, on the eastbound carriageway at around 11.20pm. A Kia and a black BMW collided.

“Officers, supported by colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service, responded to the collision. Sadly, a woman in her 60s, who was inside the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers at this difficult time.

“A man in his 70s, who was also inside the Kia, has been taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening at this time. A man in his 20s, who was in the BMW, was taken to hospital and is currently in a critical condition.

“A 32-year-old man, from Cannock[11], has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The road has since been re-opened following a period of disruption in the early hours.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision, or those with CCTV and dashcam footage from the area in particular, are asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident 898 of 21 December, or message us using Live Chat on our website[12].
