Villagers say road is so riddled with potholes it’s like ‘surface of moon’

A parish council boss has likened a main road through her village to the surface of the moon due to the sheer number of potholes. Cllr Janet Palmer, the chair of Wrenbury-cum-Frith Parish Council, says the situation is so bad that traffic has to crawl along the road to try to avoid the numerous potholes.

And Cllr Palmer has slammed Cheshire East Council for its lack of action to resolve the problem, despite repeated calls for something to be done over the past three years. She said the council had agreed to do it and then they have now pushed it back to June next year.

Cllr Palmer said: "It's been over three years now and it's just totally ridiculous. The road is virtually impassable in places.

"It's almost like the surface of the moon at the moment. The whole village has just had enough of it.

"You have to drive very very slowly and manoeuvre around the potholes. Also, when it rains the potholes fill with water so you can't tell where the potholes are. They are deep.

Villagers in Wrenbury say they have had enough after trying to get something done about these potholes for three years now

"Apart from the impact on cars, it's also a Cheshire cycle route and there's no way cyclists can go down it. I know the problems Cheshire East have had but this has just gone on and on.

"They said it would be happening in April and now they are saying it will be June next year. Something has to be done now, even if it's temporary until they can do the major work next year."

And sharing photos of the pothole-riddled road, Cllr Palmer's husband, Neil Palmer said: "Cheshire East agreed to sort it out and then they have turned round and pulled the funding. These two pictures show a stretch of our roads in the village of Wrenbury. Has anyone got worse?

"My photos don't do it justice. It is atrocious. Some of the potholes are pretty big.

"The Parish Council have been campaigning for the last three years to get it repaired. Cheshire East were supposed to repair it but then pulled funds to other projects.

"I think they've pulled the funding three times now."

Neil, who ran the village shop alongside his wife until their retirement a few years ago, added: "They now say because the road goes over a railway that they are waiting for Network Rail permission apparently. It takes six months but surely this should have been done already in the previous three years. This is one of the main roads out of Wrenbury."
