Update on Leicester inner ring road underpass disruption after leak

Severn Trent has shared an update on a leak in Leicester's Southgates Underpass which led to traffic disruption on Boxing Day. Drivers were warned to allow extra time when travelling into the city centre on what was expected to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Traffic heading south - anti-clockwise - on the inner ring road had to be funnelled across St Nicholas Circle and into one lane along Peacock Lane and Southgates before re-joining the A594 on Newarke Street. Severn Trent said it was best to complete the work after Christmas[1] rather than in the run-up to it.

The work has now been completed, two days ahead of the original schedule, Severn Trent said. Only one lane was initially reopened on Wednesday, December 27, while contractors had to resurface the carriageway but reopened fully by around 4pm.

Sven Brown, Severn Trent's water networks regional lead, said: “We’re pleased to say that Southgates Underpass on Vaughan Way is now open again after our teams worked hard to repair a leak.

“The repair was completed, and the road re-opened yesterday as of 4pm, two days ahead of schedule. We’re sorry for any disruption this work caused but we’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as our teams worked hard to finish this repair.”
