The teen who was killed by a semi-truck while getting off a school bus[1] in Livingston, Texas, on Thursday has been identified by his family.

The 15-year-old student was identified as Eduardo Romero Flores by Alejandra Posada and Yared Banda, who created a GoFundMe[2] fundraiser to raise money for his funeral expenses.

“On 12/7/23, our 15 year-old brother Eduardo Romero Flores was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler as he was exiting his school bus in front of our home. His sudden death has shaken and broken our family,” the fundraiser description reads. “Eduardo was a happy boy who had many dreams and aspirations and we will all miss him dearly.”

“We appreciate all of your support and prayers during this difficult time for our families,” it concludes. “Thank you and God bless you all.”

Romero Flores' family did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

The driver of the semi-truck that struck the teen outside of his home has been identified as 41-year-old Gregory Jackson, NBC affiliate KPRC[3] reported.

Jackson has been charged with criminal negligent homicide, and is currently being held in Polk County Jail in Livingston, according to jail records viewed by PEOPLE.

His bond has been set at $250,000.

Romero Flores, a freshman in the Livingston Independent School District, had just exited a district bus on U.S. Route 59 on Thursday afternoon when the deadly collision occurred, per a post[5] made by the Texas Department of Public Safety on X (formerly Twitter).

Officials said the school bus was stopped when the 18-wheeler rear-ended a Toyota traveling behind the bus and veered into Romero Flores’ driveway, where he was exiting the vehicle, ABC affiliate KTRK-TV[6] and CBS affiliate KHOU-TV[7] reported.

He died at the scene of the crash.

Neither Jackson (the semi-truck driver) nor the Toyota driver sustained injuries in the collision, another ABC affiliate, KTRE[8], reported.

Police said the district vehicle’s flashing red sign was out when the crash occurred, according to both KHOU-TV and the Fort Worth Star Telegram[9].

Livingston Independent School District released a statement following Romero Flores’ death.

“Our district lost a member of its family,” the statement, obtained by KPRC, began. “At times like this, we are reminded how precious life can be and how fragile each life truly is. It is sad when our district loses a member of its family. It is even more tragic when such a young life is taken away from us. We extend our thoughts and sincere condolences to family and friends.”

In its statement, the district also said it would provide counselors to “listen and help any students needing assistance.”

Livingston Independent School District and the Texas Department of Safety did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.
