Green light for new crossing on busy road near Aldi after residents …
Campaigners have spoken of their joy after winning their battle for a new crossing on the busy Birmingham New Road. Work is under way to create the crossing on the road between Aldi[1] and Dudley[2] Canal Trust after calls for more help for people trying to cross the road.
According to Crashmap.co.uk there were seven incidents on the section of road between 2018 and 2022, involving 13 vehicles and 8 casualties. Resident Gordon Laird said: “There have been countless times when I’ve seen people struggling to get over the road, particularly moms with prams that have been stuck in the middle of the road when trying to get over with waggons and cars flying by, which is just not safe at all.”
Campaigners say the crossing will be welcomed by people walking from the Foxyards Estate to get to nearby Aldi or the Priory Community Centre while parents heading to and from Foxyards Primary School should also benefit. The new crossing is located close to the junction with Woodcroft Avenue and the ramp to Bradfield Way.

I know how concerned residents have been about road safety, and whilst the average speed cameras that we also campaigned and secured on this stretch have slowed traffic down, there was still no crossing point. “Therefore, alongside my colleagues Councillors Karl Denning and Margaret Aston, we’ve been lobbying the council for a new crossing and it’s great that our campaign has now paid off and work has started on the crossing, so I have no doubt this will make a massive difference”.
