Woman in Royal Stoke as car overturns in A500 rush-hour smash

A woman has been taken to hospital after an A500[1] smash left a car on its roof - and triggered huge rush-hour queues. Police, paramedics and firefighters[2] were called to the northbound carriageway near the Tunstall[3] turn-off.

The collision - which occurred at around 5.50pm yesterday evening - left the road gridlocked with spiralling queues. StokeonTrentLive reported last night[4] how Staffordshire Police[5] had confirmed four vehicles were involved.

Motorists on the A500 reported seeing 'two fire engines, ambulances and loads of police cars'. Images from the scene showed traffic at a standstill and positioned away from the central white line to give space for emergency services to get through. Further photographs showed one car on its roof.

West Midlands Ambulance Service[6] had received an initial report of a crash involving two cars. Paramedics treated a man, one of the drivers, at the scene while a woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was taken to hospital.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival we discovered two patients. A woman, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. A man, who was the driver of one of the cars, was treated for minor injuries and discharged at the scene."

StokeonTrentLive has approached Staffordshire Police for a statement regarding the collision. Any witnesses should call police on 101.
