SCOTS are being warned to brace themselves for more snow and ice as the subzero Scandinavian freeze is set to last for several days.

The UK is copping a blast of cold air from northern Scandinavia, resulting in a cold snap for many in northern parts of the country.

Daytime temperatures are expected to drop to single-digit figures this week.

The mercury at night expected to stay below freezing for large parts of Scotland.

These low temperatures are set to continue into next week.

Snow[1] has already fallen on the A9 near the Slochd Summit this morning, causing travel chaos for drivers.

Cameras show the road covered in the white stuff, with Bear Scotland urging motorists to drive to the conditions.

The Aberdeenshire[2] village of Braemar was also given a dusting of snow last night.

Showers throughout Wednesday morning will likely see ice form on untreated surfaces, which may make some roads and pathways hazardous and slippery.

Snow is also expected, especially for people in places away from windward coasts, with the Met Office[3] predicting up to three centimetres of snow will fall.

The Met warns that people may see up to five centimetres of snowfall in higher parts of northeast Scotland.

Some roads and rail services are likely to be impacted, with Scots warned to prepare for longer or delayed journey times on roadways, railways, and public transport.

Yesterday, the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings[4] covering large areas over the next few days.

The first warning for snow and ice was in place from 5pm last night.

It covered areas including Edinburgh, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands and the Borders and will remain in place until 11am this morning.

A separate warning will then kick in from 5pm tonight until 11am on Thursday.

Orkney, Shetland and the Isle of Lewis are to brace for hazardous conditions.

The warning extends down the east coast right down to the Borders and into England.

Last night, STV weatherman Sean Batty warned[5] that Scotland will be plunged into a 'lengthy cold spell' - similar to the Big Freeze that gripped the country back in 2010.

He said that heavy snow and ice which is set to blast the nation in the coming days could last for weeks.
